Turning & Compatibility
This project is designed around the 3/8"-16 UM Universal Mandrel System. For turning the handle, use the UM Mandrel with the 13/16" bushing.
The same 13/16" bushing is used with many of our stainless steel bottle stopper and opener projects, making this an easy addition for turners who already own the Universal Mandrel setup.
There are no complicated kit instructions required. Simply mount your prepared blank and turn between centers using the appropriate UM hardware.
Recommended Handle Material
This masher looks great with almost anything you can put on the lathe, including:
- Exotic hardwoods
- Figured domestic woods
- Stabilized woods
- Laminated and segmented blanks
- Acrylic project blanks
- Hybrid blanks
- Spectraply
Because this is a substantial kitchen utensil, a larger, comfortably contoured handle like the one shown in our finished example can make the masher particularly comfortable to use.
Optional Knurled Brass Insert
For a handle that can be easily removed from the stainless steel masher for cleaning, we recommend installing our 3/8"-16 Knurled Brass Insert into your turned handle.
The masher can then simply screw into and out of the handle rather than being permanently bonded in place. This makes assembly, disassembly, cleaning, and future handle replacement much easier.
Tips for Success
- Shape the handle with a comfortable palm swell for better leverage while mashing.
- A slightly larger handle works particularly well with this project because of the pressure applied during use.
- Use a durable finish appropriate for a frequently handled kitchen utensil.
- If using the optional threaded insert, make sure it is installed straight and securely in the handle.
- Because the hardware is removable when used with an insert, the stainless steel portion can be cleaned separately from the turned handle.
