In nature, both tortoiseshell and horn are made from the protein keratin. But whereas tortoiseshell is transparent, the horn is opaque. The center of our horn substitute is streaked with a creamy taupe coloring that is bordered with darker brown bands. This is a very attractive alternate material - and looks very much like the real deal!
