Turning Tips

Because Arctic Fern combines Alumilite resin with real pasta, the blank contains materials of different densities. A little extra care while turning will help produce the best results.

• Use very sharp tools and light cuts

• Avoid aggressive cuts when approaching exposed pasta inclusions

• A negative-rake carbide cutter can be helpful with mixed-material blanks

• Drill carefully and clear chips frequently to minimize heat buildup

• Sand progressively through fine grits to create an even surface across the resin and inclusions

• Polish with your favorite acrylic or resin polishing system for a smooth, high-gloss finish

• Take your time as you approach final diameter—the pattern will continue changing as additional sections of the pasta are exposed

• Blanks are cast under high pressure, but as with any embed, occasionally air can get trapped. We recommend repairing any of these air bubbles with white colored epoxy.
