Caribbean Walnut (Tzalam) Woodturning Spindles

Tzalam, commonly known as "Caribbean Walnut," resembles Hawaiian Koa with its light to medium brown heartwood and reddish or purplish tones. Despite its nickname, it is not a true walnut. Like Hawaiian Koa, Tzalam is easy to work with, glues well, and achieves a smooth, lustrous finish, making it ideal for creating impressive turned objects such as a peppermills or large turning projects.

  • Common Name: Tzalam, Caribbean Walnut, Sabicu, False Tamarind
  • Scientific Name: Lysiloma spp. (L. bahamense and L. latisiliquum)
  • Native Area: Mexico and Central America
  • Hardwood has an open medium texture and medium luster. Resembles Koa
  • Straight grain with an open, uniform texture. 
  • Color: Light to medium brown, with occasional darker brown streaks
  • Makes an excellent wood for turning projects of all types
  • Non-Stabilized
