Goncalo Alves Pen Blanks
Known as tigerwood or Brazilian tigerwood, Goncalo alves is a beautiful wood for pen making and pen blanks. Woodturners sometimes use the name jobillo for higher grades. This wood has superb stiffness, density, hardness, and durability, making it excellent for turning projects. However, it can be difficult to glue due to its natural moisture resistance.
The pen blanks measure 3/4" x 5".
- Common Name: Goncalo alves, tigerwood, jobillo, muiracatiara
- Scientific Name: Astronium spp. (primarily A. fraxinifolium and A. graveolens)
- Native Area: From Mexico southward to Brazil
- Hardwood, with a fine, uniform texture and a good natural luster. Easy to turn.
- Grain can be straight, but is usually wavy or interlocked
- Color: Medium reddish brown with irregularly spaced streaks of dark brown to black
- Makes an excellent wood for turning projects of all types
