Purpleheart Pen Blanks

Purpleheart, also known as amaranth, is a highly sought-after hardwood in pen blanks and wood working due to  its unique and vibrant nature. When freshly cut, the heartwood of purpleheart may appear dull grayish/purplish brown. However, within just a few days of exposure, it transforms into a deeper eggplant purple, making it an incredibly eye-catching material.

Not only that, but purpleheart is also known for its remarkable strength and durability, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of applications. Over time and exposure to UV light, the wood darkens into a brownish-purple shade, but to slow down this color shift, a UV inhibiting finish can be applied. All in all, purpleheart is a functional and beautiful choice for anyone looking for an impressive and long-lasting material.

Purpleheart will naturally brown over time. But you can revitalize the purple color - either leave in the sunlight or use heat to bring out the color!

The pen blanks measure 3/4" x 5" or 3/4 x 6"

  • Common Name: Purpleheart, amaranth, roxinho, violeta
  • Scientific Name : Peltogyne spp.
  • Native Area: Central and South America (from Mexico down to southern Brazil)
  • Hardwood, with a medium texture with a good natural luster. Easy to turn.
  • A natural purple-colored wood.
  • Makes an excellent wood for turning projects of all types
  • Pen Blank measures approx.: 3/4" x 3/4" x 5" or 3/4" x 3/4" x 6"
