Red Mallee Burl Casting
Description
Red Mallee Burl Casting pieces
Red Malle (Eucalyptus oleosa, E. socialis) is a species of Australian eucalyptus that is common in Australia. Red Mallee is prized for its heavy concentration of burl eyes and vivid color and figure. This burl features a distinctive mix of pink, red, and violet heartwood with contrasting white sapwood. Mallees are usually smaller and shorter than trees, and grow multiple smaller-diameter stems from a common root system. Because of this, most mallee species are ill suited for lumber, though they do have a propensity for burl growths that can be harvested and used for turning pens, bowls and other small objects.
The package includes pieces under 3 inches in length-suitable for casting or segmenting. One pound in weight, picture above shows quantity you should anticipate. These pieces have had the wax removed and are clean, but not necessarily dry. We recommend full drying before casting. Weight is approximately equivalent to 6 blanks that are 5" long, 7/8" square.
